Local Los Angeles chapter: Latinx and Asian-American creative culture and artists




PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn about historic and contemporary Latinx and Asian-American artists and their influence on culture. Get familiar with their artistic voice, style of work, and the context in which work is produced, especially as it affects the Los Angeles cultural landscape. 

TASK
Visit a gallery or museum in the Los Angeles area that showcases work from historic or contemporary Latinx and Asian-American artists and bring the following on Wed, 10/16:

  • Choose and study an artwork created by a Latinx or Asian-American artist, displayed in an on-going exhibition in the Los Angeles area. Bring pictures of the artwork from your visit.

  • Write a 450-500 word response to the artwork that should include: 

    - What is the creative concept and what is it communicating?

    - What is the style of work? For example, if it is an illsutration, what style of illustration is used? Is it line art or concept art or 3D illustration? Another example, if it is a photograph - what kind of photographic style has been been used - is it a portrait or street photography or  landscape photography? Why do you think this style of work has been used for this artwork?`

    - What materials or tools have been used to make the artwork? Can you think about why the artist has used these materials and tools to make the artwork?

    - Write about the historic or contemporary social context in which the work is produced and its impact on culture.

Grading Criteria
Learn about the history of Latinx and Asian-American artists in Los Angeles. Differenciate between the style and methods used by them to create work.

Written response to the works and theories of artists and their influence on culture.
