ASSIGNMENT 05

TECHNOLOGY

EVER GIVEN:
on Mobility, Stasis and
the Circulation of Images
after the ‘Global Turn’

by Eva-Maria Troelenberg

PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to learn about global digital image histories and contemporary practices of image use and circulation (mobility).

LEARNING POINTS
You will learn about how images act on the interface of social media communities, activist art, and a global, digital vernacular that is becoming an increasingly important element in new artistic practices.

TASK
  • Complete the reading. There are parts of the reading that are easy to read through and parts that need contemplation. Give it your best shot to understand the new concepts this reading introduces you to and look up any words that are new to you. We will have a thorough discussion of the reading in class and your participation will be evaluated.

  • In groups of three, search for and present (5 mins!) an image that has been widely circulated on social media; an image that has been manipulated and decontextualized to produce memes in popular culture. Present the following on Wed, 10/23:

    - Show an example of the original image. What is the original subject in the image? What is the original relevance and context of the image?

    - Show examples of the memes created with the image. How do these memes decontextualize the image? What do the new memes communicate that is different to the intended message behind the original image? Why was the image manipulated in these ways?

    - Were any specific symbols or motifs in the image highlighted through the memes?

    - Did the memes have any social impact on individuals or communities?
