PURPOSE
For this assignment, you will engage with the reading Black Art Matters and reflect critically on its themes, arguments, and implications. The reading examines the intersection of race, art, and culture, particularly focusing on the significance of Black art in contemporary society and its role in activism, identity, and resistance. Your response should demonstrate an understanding of the text and an ability to engage with its central ideas critically.


TASK
Complete the Black Art Matters reading on Canvas. Answer the following questions and submit a written response on canvas by 12/04. 

After reading the article, how has your understanding of the Black Lives Matter movement and its use of branding evolved? How has the branding of BLM shifted the way the public perceives issues of racial justice? (350-450 words)

What new insights have you gained about the role of branding design in social movements, and how might this impact your view of other contemporary social justice movements? Choose another social or political movement (e.g., #MeToo, LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice) and compare its use of branding to the strategies described in "Black Art Matters." How do they differ or resemble one another? (400-500 words)

Explore the issues of racial and social justice in the art and design world. How can branding influence the ideation, production, and perception of designed objects and culture?

Define the pluralistic dimensions of design history and discourse, and the importance of having a multi-cultural design education.

Reading response

Critical engagement: Does the response engage thoughtfully with the text, offering analysis, reflection, and critique?

Clarity and organization: Is the response well-organized, clearly written, and free of grammatical or spelling errors?

Originality: Does the response offer original insights or personal reflections, rather than just summarizing the reading?
